Christmas 2012 has been confirmed as the new opening date for the Trinity Leeds retail development.
Despite the current challenging economic conditions, developers remain committed to the project and say it will transform the Leeds shopping offer.
Bob De Barr, development director for TQD said: “We firmly believe that Trinity Leeds will deliver a quality shopping destination for Leeds. Difficult decisions regarding the delivery of the scheme have had to be made in the context of the wider economy.
"We have thought long and hard about the best way to deliver the scheme and everything suggests that 2012 will be a more appropriate delivery date for all stakeholders.
He added: “Although there will be a temporary stop to works on site, behind the scenes we will continue to work hard on progressing our plans for Trinity Leeds. Our key focus will be to maintain the momentum achieved so far in drawing top retailers, restaurant and leisure operators to the city.”
Trinity Leeds will transform the area around Briggate, Commercial Street, Albion Street and Boar Lane and will include more than 120 retail units and the first Everyman Cinema in the North.
The new build element of the scheme on the site of the former Burton and Trinity Arcades, will be fully integrated with a re-modelled Leeds Shopping Plaza to create a single seamless shopping and leisure environment under a spectacular roof – providing leading fashion brands and a stylish new café/restaurant quarter for the millions of visitors each year.
As part of the regeneration of the Trinity Quarter, a planning application for the multi million pound remodelling of Albion Street is expected to be submitted by TQD to Leeds City Council this week.
The plans will remove outdated 1970s architecture, change elevations to Bond Street and provide much needed modern frontages to this historically important thoroughfare.
Trinity Leeds’ leasing director John Grimes said: “Trinity Leeds will provide a superb setting for retailers in the heart of the UK’s third largest city, supported by a demographic ideal for designer brands, inspirational and upcoming labels, innovative leisure and restaurant operators.
"The timescales give us the opportunity to deliver the best possible retailing and leisure environment for Leeds.”
