Leeds and West Yorkshire offer the ideal location for events and conferences. Positioned at the geographical centre of the UK it is within easy reach for delegates travelling from all parts of the country.
Journey times by train from London have been cut to just over two hours while Leeds Bradford International Airport is only eight miles from the city centre. The boom in low cost airlines means delegates can fly in direct from over 40 destinations.
Leeds has a compact city centre and you can easily walk from end to end in twenty minutes.
The success of Leeds as a business centre has been the catalyst for major hotel development in recent years, with 24 major hotels in the city centre alone.
These include budget, 3-star, 4-star, luxury, townhouse, chain and independent options, able to cater for events for up to 600 delegates at the Queens Hotel and all just a short walk from Leeds City Station.
Summer 2009 saw the opening of the new City Inn hotel open as part of the redevelopment of Granary Wharf on the Leeds waterfront.
With its historic collections and waterfront setting, the Royal Armouries offers a unique conference and exhibition venue in Leeds. Saviles Hall at the Royal Armouries has uninterrupted sight lines and 27,000sq ft of exhibition space. It is able to accommodate conferences for over 1,000 delegates.
The Rose Bowl at Leeds Metropolitan University is the latest addition to the city’s conference portfolio. Opened in May 2009, it provides state of the art seminar and conference facilities in a modern and contemporary building in the city’s civic quarter.
For something a bit different, conference venues include the Thackray Museum, Xscape, Harewood House, Headingley Carnegie Stadium, the National Media Museum, West Yorkshire Playhouse, the National Coal Mining Museum and the Royal Armouries.
Incentive ideas include cookery schools, spas, golf, off-road driving or even hiring a TV studio to make your own TV show or advertisement.
Leeds is a favourite destination for conference delegates with lots to occupy their free time including fantastic shopping and a lively, European-style café scene.
In the evening delegates can choose from a great range of bars and restaurants, some of the best clubbing outside London, theatre at West Yorkshire Playhouse and the magnificent Leeds Grand Theatre, or performances by Opera North and Northern Ballet.
Live music is well catered for and, with SMG Europe selected as the operator for the proposed £80 million Leeds arena, the city will soon be able to enjoy major performances from world class artists. The 12,500 seat concert and entertainment venue is due to open in 2012.
